S4C DREIGIAU CADI
Co Puppet Designers & Makers: Jess Jones & Ruby Gibbens
The dragons featured in Dreigiau Cadi were meticulously designed and created with careful consideration for each shot. In addition to incorporating mechanisms for blinking, ear movement, and mouth articulation (constructed by Jess Jones), every aspect of the puppets were designed to accommodate various modes of operation. The puppets were designed to be split in half and reconnected using magnets, enabling the lower-half for walking scenes (from the waist down) and the upper-half to be manipulated in half-shots. Rods were also provided and could be attached and detached to the hands and wings.
Jess Jones and Ruby Gibbens collaborated closely to address complex challenges, ranging from achieving realistic flight effects in front of a green screen to capturing full-body shots, all while minimising the weight of the puppets on long shooting days.
